If you use coco coir instead of peat moss, know you're using a completely inert medium so you will need to amend the coco coir with gypsum at about a 1/2 cup per cubic foot of coco coir. Use high quality, preferably local compost that has been well-composted, doesn't smell or stick or anything like that. Often times I'll split the amount of compost I use with earthworm castings. For aeration you could use perlite (though I don't recommend it as it breaks down into sand in the soil over time), rice hulls (a better perlite), or lava rocks. After that I amend it with 1/2 cup of Kelp Meal per cubic foot of soil, a 1/2 cup of Neem Seed meal per cubic foot, 1/2 cup of crab meal per subic foot, 1 cup of Azomite per cubic foot, and 1 cup of Oyster Shell flour per cubic foot of soil. Then add biochar at around 10% of the total volume. This is just what I use and is by no means the best soil mix. I hope this helps, if you have any questions just let me know!
Aloha & A good mix used on Hawai'i is 50% black cinder lava rock, 23% coarse peat, 23% coco coir, and 5% to 10% bio activated biochar. https://pacificbiochar.com
